I’m Sleeping with Somebody New

I got my husband’s attention the other day when I said I couldn’t wait to get in bed with Devin. Of course he looked at me as if I’d lost my mind, until I explained Devin is the hero is my third manuscript. I love men. Let me clarify, real men (for my definition of a real man read this post). A man’s body: his hands, arms, shoulders, back, butt, thighs, calves, lips and let’s not forget his…brain. 🙂 When all those things are tight, it’s a huge turn on. So, obviously as I get to know the men in my novels I fall in love with each of them. And look forward to testing their skills in the bedroom.

I am not an erotica writer, but my stories are steamy. After investing so much time learning my characters, tapping into their emotions, and what makes them tick it only makes sense to describe how they are in bed. I don’t fade to black, or allude to sexual encounters, especially when the sex moves the story forward. I’m not a fan of sex in a book just because. Unless it progresses character development or adds another layer to the story then leave it out. In my second novel I removed one sexual encounter because it was there more for my enjoyment—Jared is so sexy to me—than to move the story forward.

What I enjoy more than writing about my characters in bed is leading up to it. The looks, accidental touches, quickening of the breath or heart which come before sex, is as enticing as the act itself. It allows me to relive those early moments in a relationship when everything is new and exciting. Even better, I get to relieve those moments with a different man and stay totally faithful to my husband. It’s one of the reasons—in my humble opinion—people like romance novels. Whether is spicy or sweet, each novel lets you meet someone new, watch them fall in love, and maybe fall in love with those characters yourself. Or at least enjoy their experiences in the bedroom.

Writers, do you look forward to getting in bed with your characters? Readers do you like seeing everything characters do in bed or do you prefer the fade to black?
